India had been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. The colors, the energy, the food, everything about it fascinated me. So when I finally got the chance to visit, I knew it was going to be an adventure like no other. As someone who loves Indian food, Bollywood movies, and the thrill of exploring new places, India felt like the perfect destination. I spent three weeks immersing myself in the beauty of the north, from the chaotic charm of Delhi to the royal palaces of Rajasthan and the golden dunes of Jaisalmer. This blog is a little bit long but that is only because I wanted to give you ALL the info you need for your adventure in India. This guide will include a packing list, itinerary´s, activities advice, transport advice, budget hostel advice and a budget breakdown.

What To Expect
Money
India is still a largely cash-based society, especially in smaller towns. While credit cards are widely accepted in big cities and tourist areas, having cash on hand is essential. ATMs are common, but some may run out of cash or charge high fees, so withdraw a little bit more then you think you’ll need. The local currency is the Indian Rupee (INR), and foreign cards may not work everywhere, so always carry a mix of payment options. Mobile payment apps like Google Pay and Paytm are also popular for small transactions.
Plugs
India uses Type D and Type M plugs, which have three round pins. The voltage is 230V, 50Hz, so check if your devices are compatible or bring a voltage converter if needed. A universal adapter is a must, as different accommodations may have slightly different socket styles.
Safety
India is generally safe for travelers, but taking basic precautions is important. Here are some key tips:
Scams: Be cautious of common tourist scams, such as fake ticket sellers, overpriced taxi rides, and unsolicited guides.
Health: Stick to bottled or filtered water, and avoid street food that looks unhygienic. Carry a basic first aid kit with medicines for stomach issues. Use Deet to warm off mosquitoes who can carry Dengue (trust me I know, I caught Dengue here myself)
Female travel: If you re a woman traveling avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas and dress modestly to blend in. Making a male backpacker friend or two can help you with the hassle!
Itinerary
Traveling through India is like stepping into a living, breathing storybook. Colorful, chaotic, spiritual, and endlessly surprising!
You’ll probably start in Delhi, which is basically organized chaos. Think packed streets, street food smells everywhere, and rickshaws zooming past. Old Delhi is a total maze of markets and tiny alleys, while New Delhi feels way more chill with big buildings and parks.
From there, head into Rajasthan, starting with Bikaner, a desert city with with cool forts and old houses that look like they belong in a movie. Then it’s onward to Raisar, where the desert stretches forever and nights are filled with traditional music, starlit skies, and the heath of the campfire.
Next, Jaisalmer, the Golden City. Everything’s this warm yellow color and the fort feels like a whole small town. Then I headed to Jodhpur, the Blue City. All the houses are painted bright blue and The fort sits high above everything like it’s watching over the city.
Udaipur is way more laid-back with its lakes and beautiful palaces, perfect for just relaxing. Then there’s Pushkar, a small holy town wrapped around a sacred lake. Perfect for browsing bohemian markets, trying sweet malpua pancakes, or catching the evening aarti (prayer ceremony).
After that came Jaipur, the Pink City. It’s busy and loud, with huge forts and chaotic markets. Everything you’d expect from Rajasthan! From here, the journey turns toward one of India’s icons: Agra and the Taj Mahal. Yeah, it’s touristy, but seeing it in real life? Totally worth it.
Finally, you’ll end in Varanasi, India’s spiritual heart. Life here happens right on the Ganges: people bathing, praying, lighting fires all day long. It’s humbling, intense, and kind of spiritual in a way that will stick with you.

How To Get Around
Train
Trains are very useful for long-distance travel. There are diffrent types of trains, from sleepers with arco to jam-packed coupes with ceiling fans. Make sure to pack enough water and bring enough entertainent.
Bus
Another handy was to travel long distance is the bus. You can book tickets online or at busstations. Just like the train, the bus can take you to your destination but for even less money!
Tuk Tuk
For short distances you can best take a tuktuk. You can just them around on the streets. The will probably address you as well. Always decide on a price before getting in.

DELHI
Delhi is a city that’s constantly on the move. It’s loud, chaotic, and vibrant, a perfect blend of ancient history and modern hustle. The streets are always alive, with the scent of street food in the air and the honking of car horns around every corner.
Now, I have to admit, I didnt spend a ton of time here. Delhi was more of my base for the trip. It’s the kind of city where you could easily spend days exploring, but for me, it was a quick stopover before heading deeper into the heart of India.
